Velondriake Committee

The Velondriake committee are a group of officials chosen by villages to act on their behalf within Velondriake and are in charge of the management and stewardship of the protected area. Blue Ventures work in partnership with the association, providing guidance and assistance as needed.

The goals of the Velondriake committee within the network are as follows:

(i) To promote sustainable fisheries management.

(ii) To develop strategies for nature conservation.

(iii) To promote economic development.

(iv) To improve solidarity and communications between local communities.

(v) To develop regional environmental education initiatives.

(vi) To promote long terms sustainable resource use for future generations.

(vii) To devleop regional capacity for ecotourism.

The Velondriake committee also play a vital role in the drafting and enforcement of 'dina', the local lawa that for the backbone of the conservation measure taking place within the MPA network.
